Brenda Walker
Hi I am Brenda, a Specialist Mathematics educator. I have worked as a primary teacher for 11 years. Then I worked as a mathematics facilitator working for the University of Waikato in Tauranga and Hamilton for 8 years. I also spent 2 years working as a mathematics advisor in a school in the United Arab Emirates.
While working for the University I mentored teachers to implement an intervention to accelerate and raise students’ achievement in mathematics. At Learning Matters I am able to use my expertise which is research based, to provide explicit teaching which is responsive to the children’s needs. Children are empowered and successful as they become numerate.
I have always been interested in why children struggle with understanding mathematics and making connections between concepts. I am passionate about developing students confidence, knowledge and strategies to approach and solve mathematics problems.
I enjoy identifying students strengths and teaching using a multi-sensory approach to enhance each students mathematical ability which they can apply to real life situations. I foster positive relationships with students, parents, schools and colleagues, working collaboratively in both our Te Awamutu and Hamilton Centres.
