Learning MATTERS
10th Birthday Symposium

Dedicated to strengthening evidence-based literacy practice in Aotearoa.

Welcome!

Join educators from across the motu for this one-day event which we will host in Christchurch and then in Auckland.

As we mark ten years of Learning MATTERS, this event offers a moment to reflect on how far we have all come and what is now required to ensure every learner experiences effective, consistent instruction.

We will host three exciting keynote speakers who will share their knowledge and experience with the opportunity for you to ask questions at the end of each of their sessions.

The day will weave together insights on system design, instructional practice, and leadership for change. Whether you are driving school-wide change or refining classroom practice, the aim of the Symposium is to give you clarity, energy, and a renewed sense of purpose for the mahi ahead!

Introducing our 2026 10th Birthday Symposium line-up!

Dr Sarah Brown

Sarah is the President of System Impact Consulting and comes to our symposium to share her thoughts and considerable experience on Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). Over her career she has held roles as a Special Education Director, Professional Learning Administrator and School Psychologist. Sarah has co-authored two books – ‘Effective Universal Instruction: An Action-Oriented Approach to Improving Tier 1’ and ‘MTSS for Reading Improvement: A Leaders’ Toolkit for Schoolwide Success’. Sarah says she was implementing MTSS “before it was cool!”

We are delighted she is able to join us and share her knowledge.

Brendan Lee

Brendan is a former teacher, who, like many of us, became disheartened at the number of disengaged students he was seeing and started looking for answers. He is now a much sought-after keynote speaker and will be focusing on how to teach for retention through the lens of mathematics. He has worked with schools and educators to great effect all over Australia and we are very much looking forward to hearing more about his journey down what he calls “a rabbit hole of research on the science of learning.”

We hope to see some new faces in the room, perhaps those that come for the maths and stay for the literacy!

Steven Capp

Steve is a returning guest who has some significant implementation success stories under his belt. Currently the Principal of Chelsea Heights Primary School in Victoria Australia, he will be talking to us about quality leadership that supports teachers to implement change and sharing his hands-on experience of how to help teachers adopt evidence-based teaching practices.
