5 Critical Levers for Structured Literacy Success

"Are we trying to do too much?"

It is a question many school leaders and teachers are asking right now.

Across Aotearoa, schools are working incredibly hard to strengthen literacy outcomes while also navigating significant curriculum and system change. In the middle of this, it can feel as though everything needs to be implemented at once.

But sustainable change rarely works that way.

Strong Structured Literacy implementation is not about doing everything, everywhere, all at once. It is about knowing what matters most, narrowing the focus, and building practice deliberately over time.

Sometimes the most powerful question is not “Are we doing enough?”

It is:

  • What should we focus on next?

  • What can we pause, simplify, or strengthen?

  • Where will our energy make the greatest difference for learners?

We have created a simple reflection tool to support leadership teams, literacy teams, and staff groups to think about where they are in their implementation journey and what the next right step might be.

It is designed to spark conversation and reflection, rather than serve as a checklist.

Progress does not come from doing everything at once.

It comes from clarity, focus, and deliberate next steps.

If your team would like support to think through implementation priorities, we are always happy to help.
